When speaking at the opening of the Eurasian Club in Berlin, a forum to discuss political and social cooperation issues between Kazakhstan and Germany, Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev said he didn’t believe the rumors that the new wave of the global economy crisis would be much more large-scaled than the previous ones, Tengrinews.kz reports. “There are many speculations over the next crisis. When there are too many speculations over something, this something doesn’t happen. Think of the much-spoken-about apocalypse which is supposedly lying in wait for us December 21, 2012 [the end-date of the Mayan Calendar] … “, President Nazarbayev said when answering questions from the Eurasian Club members. “Yesterday is history; nobody knows if there is any tomorrow; let’s live for today (…) In 1997 I proposed the Kazakhstan-2030 Development Program. Many criticized that I had been suggesting Soviet-style plans. Twenty years ago the people [of the collapsed USSR] lost their ideals: no USSR, no shelter, death of socialism, capitalism is yet to come. I wanted to give some direction so that people would know what way to take. We’ve been implementing the Program for the last 20 years. The Program seeks to bring Kazakhstan into the club of affluent nations. We are working to make sure younger citizens are trilingual. We are offering them opportunities to obtain degrees from leading foreign universities, launching new universities. Kazakhstan is rich and enjoys stability (…). We will further enjoy stability if we keep on developing, making sure people are content with their living standards and the nation is respected by the rest of the world. We will bring the Kazakhstan-2030 Program to the end”, he said. “The Constitution states that we are building a secular democratic state. I know there are many critics claiming we have been slow to transit to genuine democracy. However, we have been only following the way of democracy for 20 years, whereas the West has been doing that for hundreds of years. I believe we should first see a new generation fully-fledged, a middle class formed – people who could truly value something they own within Kazakhstan. We are steadily moving towards democracy. Democracy in your Western sense of the word”, Kazakhstan’s President said.
